Avery basic and reliable item for the production of sound is the piezo ceramic sound element. It makes use of the so called “piezo effect”, which has been detected by Jacques and Pierre Curie in 1880. The working principle is based on the fact that a piezo ceramic disc will change its diameter and layer thickness if a DC voltage is applied. Used as a sound element the ceramic disc will be glued on a metal disc with a larger diameter. According to the polarity and the intensity of the driving voltage the whole system will flex and thus generate sound waves.
